Selection Process


Each fall, outstanding student leaders from throughout the region compete to be the next class of Roan Scholars.

*The nomination window for the Roan Class of 2022 is CLOSED. Check back in summer 2018 for information regarding how to compete for a spot in the Roan Class of 2023.


the process

  • Nominations: Nominations are accepted from eligible high schools beginning in August. Eligible homeschooled students contact the Roan office to begin the process.

  • Applications: Nominated students and homeschooled students are invited to complete the application. The deadline is typically in October.

  • Regional Selection: Our Regional Selection Committee reviews files, interviews students and provides feedback to Roan staff. A select number of students are chosen as finalists.

  • Finalist Day: Finalists are invited to the ETSU campus in early January. They meet and spend time with their fellow nominees, learn more about ETSU and the Roan, and participate in a series of interviews with the Roan Steering Committee.

  • Selection: Our Steering Committee selects the next Roan class.

  • Announcement: Once confirmed, ETSU announces the new Roan class.
