the process

  • Nominations: Nominations are accepted from eligible high schools beginning in August. Eligible homeschooled students contact the Roan office to begin the process. This year’s nomination window opened on August 13, 2018. Counselors at eligible high schools should have received an email with additional details and providing access to the online portal. Interested homeschooled students who live in an eligible nominating county should contact us at roanscholars@etsu.edu to get started.

  • Applications: Nominated students and homeschooled students are invited to complete the student application. High school officials and individuals identified to serve as a reference also complete and submit supporting materials. This year’s deadline was October 10, 2018.

  • Regional Selection: Our Regional Selection Committee reviews files, interviews students and provides feedback to Roan staff. Interviews are typically held in mid-November 2018. A select number of students are chosen as finalists.

  • Finalist Day: Finalists are invited to the ETSU campus in early January. They meet and spend time with their fellow nominees, learn more about ETSU and the Roan, and participate in a series of interviews with the Roan Steering Committee.

  • Selection: Our Steering Committee selects the next Roan class.

  • Announcement: Once confirmed, ETSU announces the new Roan class.
