Frequently Asked Questions -
School Counselors / Administrators
Q. Can only school nominees compete for the Roan?
A. No; ANY graduating senior at your school may apply directly for the Roan by visiting our website (roanscholars.org). In the portal, you will be able to view the status of all students at your school who have started a Roan application. You are welcome to select your nominee(s) from among those applicants – or to nominate other student(s) instead.
Q. What’s the difference between nominees and applicants?
A. Other than an extra file review of direct applicant files to determine who advances to our first round of interviews, there is no distinction between nominees and applicants once the interview process starts – and each incoming Roan class includes both nominees and applicants. We recognize your school is limited to just one or two nominees, so please encourage as many other outstanding individuals at the school as you see fit to apply directly for the Roan.
Q. What makes for a strong Roan candidate?
A. The Roan scholarship is much more than just a financial award; Roan Scholars develop their leadership potential through four years of unique, out-of-the-classroom experiences that challenge, inspire, encourage, and support. We ask for your help in identifying students with the capacity, desire, and drive to lead with excellence and to make a significant positive impact - both during their college years and beyond.
Q. How many seniors may our high school nominate for the Roan?
A. Senior class size determines how many students a school may nominate - schools with 300+ seniors may nominate two students for the Roan; all other schools may nominate one.
Q. Who is eligible to be nominated?
A. The steps involved in nominating a student are the same as in recent past years. Roan nominees must be on track to graduate from high school this academic year, be competitive applicants to ETSU, and be either U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens.
Q. What else do I need to know about the online nomination process?
A. Complete Roan Files contain four components: (1) Student Application; (2) Leadership Evaluation; (3) Reference; (4) Academic Data.
Student Application, Reference – Both nominees and applicants will receive (via an email from the Roan) a link to complete the Student Application and to identify the individual who will serve as a Reference.
Leadership Evaluation – For nominees, we ask that you (or someone you designate) complete this form. Direct applicants may also identify you or someone else at the school to serve as their Leadership Evaluator but we will leave that choice (and responsibility) up to the student.
Academic Data – We will pull this information from ETSU Admissions once the student has applied to ETSU and the student’s official transcript and test scores have been received by the Admissions Office. You do not need to submit any academic data to the Roan as part of the student’s Roan file but can assist students by ensuring that those official transcripts and test scores are received by ETSU prior to our deadline (October 15).
Whether each of these components is “complete” or “incomplete” is visible at all times to both school officials and students under the “Status” table in the student’s online file.
Additional information is available on our website; we also invite you to check out our social media sites to get a sense of what the Roan Experience is like for students selected as Roan Scholars.
