Selection Process

Each fall, outstanding student leaders from throughout the region compete to be in the next class of Roan Scholars.

the process

  • Direct Applications: Students (including homeschoolers) living in TN, as well as the surrounding states of GA, KY, NC, SC, and VA may apply directly to the Roan through this website, beginning August 15 each year.

  • Nominations: Eligible high schools are also eligible to nominate 1-2 students beginning on August 15. School counselors at eligible high schools will receive an email from the Roan with details about that process.

  • Roan Application / Nomination Files: Eligible student applicants and nominees complete the application online; high school officials and individuals identified to serve as references also complete and submit supporting materials. The deadline for completed files is October 15.

File Review: Completed direct application files will be assessed to determine which applicants will be invited to participate in regional interviews. Nominees with completed files, having already been through a review process at their respective high schools, will advance directly to the regional interview phase.

  • Regional Interviews: Our Regional Interview Committee reviews files, interviews students, and provides feedback to Roan staff. Interviews will occur in late-November / December. A select number of students are chosen as finalists.

  • Finalist Day: Finalists will be invited to the ETSU campus for an overnight visit in late-January. They meet and spend time with their fellow finalists, learn more about ETSU and the Roan, and participate in a series of interviews with the Roan Steering Committee.

  • Selection: Our Steering Committee selects the next Roan class.

  • Announcement: Once confirmed, ETSU announces the new Roan class - usually in February.
