When the Roan Scholars Leadership Program was established at East Tennessee State University in 1997, founder Louie Gump’s vision was to attract, retain, and develop the region’s top leadership talent, inspiring them to lives of excellence and impact.
Numerous individuals and businesses throughout the region, inspired by that vision, provided generous support to the Roan that allowed the Program to select an initial class of four Roan Scholars, who entered ETSU in the fall of 2000.
Since that time, continued support from friends of the Roan, as well as a recent partnership with ETSU, has allowed the Roan to grow from four to eight Scholars per class (with plans for additional growth in the near future), and to develop its current framework of leader development programming, summer enrichment experiences, and other opportunities. That support is not only financial but also takes many other forms: mentoring, providing shadowing and internship opportunities, speaking to Roan Scholars as part of our “Leadership in Action” series, serving on a Roan committee, task force, or work group focused on Roan Scholar selection or various Program initiatives.
Today, our Roan Alumni and friends of the Roan continue to offer their support for the vision first outlined by Mr. Gump nearly twenty years ago. As we look, however, to expand and grow the Roan, further enhance the ‘Roan Experience’ for our Scholars, and increase the Program’s capacity for positive impact, there is both a need and a great opportunity for increased support by those who share Mr. Gump’s vision, and who are philosophically compatible with the Roan’s ideas of ‘Leadership Excellence’ and ‘Lifelong Impact.’ We invite you to invest in the future by investing in the Roan.
