Founded by Mr. Louis H. Gump, a long-time friend of ETSU, this innovative Program draws its inspiration from Roan Mountain – the highest peak in the area, a motivational sight, and a symbol of the character, strength, and idealism of the region’s people.
Outstanding student-leaders from throughout the region are nominated by their high school and selected by the Roan Steering Committee based on their demonstrated excellence in four areas – Character, Leadership, Intellectual Curiosity, Physical Vigor – as well as their overall leadership potential. The Roan ‘mission’ is to develop each Scholar’s unique leadership potential and inspire them to lives of significant positive impact – on campus, throughout the region, and around the world.
Our Roan Scholars arrive at ETSU full of potential, ideas, energy, and enthusiasm. The Roan helps unleash that potential by offering challenge, resources, and support. Scholars do the rest, as they pursue their interests and passions, grow and develop their leadership skills, and seek (and find) ways to make an impact.
